NANS, Osun Poly Management Hold High-Level Talks Over Student Welfare, ICT Challenges

Addressing the meeting, the NANS President stated that the Association's intervention was informed by extensive consultations with students, student leaders, and other stakeholders, stressing that the engagement was solely motivated by the need to protect students' interests.

"Our engagement with the management is not personal. It is part of our constitutional responsibility to ensure that students receive the quality education, welfare, and enabling environment they deserve. Student welfare must always remain the priority of every tertiary institution," he said.

He commended the Students' Union President for maintaining a firm stance on issues affecting students while also applauding the Rector for embracing dialogue and constructive engagement instead of confrontation.

A major focus of the meeting was the state of the institution's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities and the implementation of the Computer-Based Examination (CBE) system.

The NANS President expressed concern over reports that students continue to pay ICT-related charges despite the inadequacy of internet facilities and digital infrastructure required to support effective teaching, learning, and examinations.

According to him, educational institutions have a responsibility to ensure that students receive value for every service they are charged for, particularly at a time when many families are struggling with the country's economic realities.

While reaffirming his support for technological advancement within the education sector, he maintained that innovation should improve learning outcomes rather than create unnecessary hardship for students.

He therefore urged the institution's management to strengthen its ICT infrastructure and provide a modern, efficient, and reliable system capable of supporting seamless computer-based examinations and other digital academic activities.

The NANS President also acknowledged the Rector's decision to provide mobility support for the Students' Union Government and appealed for the speedy completion of the proposed renovation of the Students' Union Building (SUB), describing it as a critical project that would strengthen student representation and union administration.

He further encouraged the institution to sustain regular dialogue with student leaders as a proactive mechanism for resolving issues before they escalate.

Responding on behalf of the institution, the Rector, Mr. Kehinde Alabi, appreciated the leadership of NANS for choosing constructive engagement and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving the institution.

He assured the delegation that the issues raised during the meeting would receive prompt attention, particularly those relating to student welfare, ICT development, and institutional infrastructure.

The Rector further emphasized that the management remains committed to raising the academic standards of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, while maintaining a peaceful and productive relationship with students and their representatives.

The meeting concluded with both the National Association of Nigerian Students and the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing student welfare and promoting academic excellence.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the resolutions reached during the engagement would contribute to improved institutional development and a more conducive learning environment for students.
