No Student Died at NANS Convention, NANS Says as It Calls for Full Investigation Into Comrade Jago’s Death

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has rejected reports linking the death of Comrade Jago, a graduate of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, directly to the recently concluded NANS Joint Campus Council (JCC) Osun Axis Convention.

The association, through its Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as BILLIONCODES, said its preliminary fact-finding efforts did not establish that any student was stabbed or killed within the convention premises.

The clarification followed various accounts circulating after the death of Jago, with some narratives allegedly suggesting that the incident occurred during the NANS convention.

According to NANS Southwest, the Coordinator personally commenced an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, engaging members of the immediate past JCC Caretaker Committee, individuals who attended the convention, security personnel, and officers of the Osun State Police Command.

Adeyemo also visited the Dada Estate Police Division in Osogbo, where the matter was reportedly brought to the attention of the police, to obtain further clarification.

The association said the convention itself was held at the NUJ Chapel, Capital Road, Osogbo, under controlled conditions, with accreditation and access managed by the Convention Planning Committee.

Security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force and DSS, were also reportedly present during the proceedings.

NANS said an earlier disagreement involving the deceased and some individuals was observed outside the convention gate. The association said security personnel and other stakeholders intervened and the disagreement was resolved without any stabbing being reported.

However, NANS acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding what happened to Jago afterwards remain unclear and should be determined through proper investigation.

The association said information available to it suggests that Jago was later inside a vehicle away from the controlled convention premises and subsequently complained of feeling unwell.

“Different accounts have since emerged concerning when and where he sustained an injury, who may have been around him at the material time, and the circumstances preceding the confirmation of his death,” NANS stated.

The student body consequently urged persons who were with the deceased during his final moments to cooperate with investigators and provide firsthand information.

NANS also warned against drawing conclusions from the possession of accreditation or security tags.

According to the association, having an accreditation tag does not establish that an individual was responsible for an incident allegedly occurring outside the official convention premises.

The association further acknowledged reports of a possible cult-related dimension to the incident but stressed that such reports had not been established as facts.

It called on the Osun State Police Command and relevant investigative and anti-cultism units to examine all credible possibilities, including the deceased's movements, individuals who were with him, previous disputes, and any other evidence capable of establishing what happened.

NANS also appealed to journalists and bloggers to avoid presenting unverified allegations as established facts.

The association warned that the unfortunate death should not be exploited for political retaliation or factional interests following the conclusion of the JCC election.

“The election has ended,” the statement noted, stressing that the death of a young man should not become a tool for political propaganda or division within the student community.

NANS Southwest maintained that the available information presently establishes that no student was killed inside the NANS JCC Osun Convention and that there is no evidence before the association establishing that the fatal incident occurred during the official proceedings.

The association expressed condolences to Jago's family, friends, and the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree community.
