There has been widespread outrage across Nigeria following disturbing viral videos linked to a cultural celebration in Delta State, where several women were allegedly assaulted during what is known as the “Ozoro Festival.”
According to reports, the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State has arrested six individuals, including the alleged chief organiser, identified as Omorede Sunday, in connection with the incident.
The incident gained attention after videos surfaced online showing groups of men allegedly harassing women in public. In some clips, victims were reportedly dragged from tricycles and motorcycles, with their clothes forcefully torn.
The disturbing nature of the footage has sparked strong reactions from Nigerians, especially students and civil society groups, who have condemned the act as inhumane and criminal.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
Authorities have also called on members of the public to provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations, assuring that all those involved will be brought to justice.
The Delta State Government has also strongly condemned the incident. The Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the acts as “barbaric and unacceptable,” stressing that no cultural practice should serve as a cover for criminal behaviour.
He urged security agencies to ensure that perpetrators are identified and prosecuted accordingly.
Ozoro, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area, is made up of several communities. Reports indicate that the so-called “Ozoro Festival” is actually a traditional rite known as the Alue-Do Festival, practiced in the Uruamudhu community.
The festival is traditionally associated with fertility rites, where symbolic actions are believed to encourage childbirth among married couples. However, recent events have raised serious concerns about how the practice is being carried out in modern times.
Amid the controversy, warning messages have circulated among students and residents, particularly advising female students to stay indoors or avoid certain areas during the festival period due to safety fears.
