NANS Southwest Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to OAU Management Over Student Welfare Crisis

The National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest Zone D has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the management of Obafemi Awolowo University over what it described as worsening student welfare conditions on campus.
In a statement released on April 28, 2026, the student body, under the coordination of Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, condemned what it termed administrative insensitivity and a growing disconnect between the university authorities and students’ realities.
According to the statement, recent developments at the institution have raised serious concerns, particularly regarding the introduction of a new transportation system which has reportedly affected over 35,000 students.
NANS noted that students have been subjected to overcrowding, mobility challenges, delays in academic activities, and safety risks, with no immediate solution provided by the university management despite several engagements.
The association also raised concerns over the planned mid-semester evacuation of students from Awolowo Hall (Blocks 7 and 8), describing the move as disruptive and lacking adequate planning or alternative accommodation.
NANS Southwest stated that the Great Ife Students’ Union had engaged responsibly through a 72-hour lecture boycott, dialogue with management, and a peaceful protest limited to the campus gate axis.
It maintained that these actions were orderly and did not degenerate into violence, contrary to claims by the university management.
The statement further criticized the management’s directive enforcing an immediate mid-semester break following the protest, describing it as punitive and an attempt to suppress legitimate student expression.
NANS warned that failure by the university management to address the concerns within 48 hours would lead to coordinated actions across the Southwest region.
The association added that it remains committed to dialogue but will not hesitate to mobilize students in lawful actions to demand accountability and protect student welfare.
Copies of the statement were also directed to key stakeholders, including the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Student Matters to the Osun State Governor, the Commissioner of Education, the Commissioner of Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS) in Osun State.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University has not issued an official response.
