NNGN Calls for Urgent Police Intervention as Violent Clash Rocks Ikire

The Nigeria Next Generation Network (NNGN) has called for urgent intervention by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu (Tunji Disu), following reports of violent clashes, shootings, and alleged deaths at Naira and Kobo Garage in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.

The youth-focused organisation made the call in a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, expressing deep concern over the reported violence and its potential implications for residents, commercial transport operators, and other members of the community.

According to the organisation, the incident reportedly followed a confrontation involving members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and motor park management officials over control of the facility.

NNGN said reports from the area indicated that firearms and other dangerous weapons were allegedly used during the confrontation, with claims that as many as five people, including commercial bus drivers and passersby, may have lost their lives.

The organisation, however, noted that the Osun State Police Command had confirmed that shootings occurred in the area, while investigations into the incident were ongoing.

NNGN Condemns Violence

The National President of NNGN, Hon. Amb. Abdulsobur A. Adegoke, condemned the reported violence, stressing that disagreements over the management or control of a motor park should never degenerate into bloodshed.

“No disagreement over the control of a motor park should result in the shedding of blood or the endangerment of innocent citizens.”

NNGN described the situation as particularly troubling because of the potential impact on young people who make up a significant proportion of commercial drivers, traders, and residents within transport communities.

Group Calls for Immediate Security Deployment

The organisation called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately deploy adequate and neutral security personnel to Ikire to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

It also demanded a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation capable of identifying all individuals responsible for the violence, irrespective of their affiliations.

NNGN urged the police authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law.

The organisation further called for strengthened intelligence gathering and proactive policing across identified flashpoints in Osun State to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Appeals for Calm

While calling for decisive security action, NNGN also appealed to all parties involved in the dispute to embrace dialogue and respect the rule of law.

The group warned that further confrontation could endanger more innocent residents and undermine peace across Irewole Local Government and Osun State.

NNGN said the safety of citizens must remain the priority of security agencies, particularly in communities where commercial activities bring large numbers of young people and residents together daily.

The organisation reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Ikire and called for swift action that would guarantee justice, peace, and security in the affected community.
