NNGN Condemns Rising Political Violence in Osun, Urges Youths to Defend Democracy

The Nigeria Next Generation Network (NNGN) has condemned the recent wave of political violence reported in parts of Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election, describing the development as a threat to democratic governance and public safety.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 10th of June, 2026, the organization expressed concern over reports of attacks and shootings in Osogbo, Ede, and Ile-Ife, which it said have left residents worried about security in the build-up to the election.
NNGN described incidents involving attacks on political supporters, destruction of campaign materials, and reported assassination attempts on political figures as actions capable of undermining democratic processes and peaceful political participation.
The group called on security agencies, particularly the Osun State Police Command, to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute individuals responsible for acts of political violence, regardless of political affiliation.
According to the statement, the protection of lives, property, and democratic institutions should remain a priority as the state prepares for the forthcoming governorship poll.
NNGN also urged political leaders across party lines to promote peaceful campaigns, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and encourage their supporters to embrace democratic engagement rather than violence.
Addressing young people in the state, the organization encouraged them to remain law-abiding, reject attempts to recruit them for violent activities, and actively participate in the electoral process through lawful means.
The group further advised eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), report incidents of intimidation or violence to appropriate authorities, and contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful election.
NNGN maintained that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, participation, and respect for the rule of law, stressing that political differences should never result in violence.
