The National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN), Osun State chapter, has condemned the reported shooting attack on Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola, Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, describing the incident as a threat to democratic values and public safety.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Speaker of NYAN Osun State, Rt. Hon. Sasona Mayowa Ayomide, the youth body expressed concern over the incident and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
According to NYAN, political violence remains a major threat to democratic development and should not be tolerated under any circumstance. The organization stressed that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and democratic means rather than violence.
The group urged relevant security agencies to intensify efforts toward what it described as a transparent and impartial investigation, adding that individuals found to be connected to the attack should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Beyond the incident, NYAN also cautioned young people against allowing themselves to be used by politicians or political interests to perpetrate violence, intimidation, or electoral disruption.
The organization noted that the consequences of political violence often extend beyond election periods, leaving lasting effects on communities and families.
NYAN further called on political leaders, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and security agencies to collaborate in promoting peace, tolerance, and democratic participation across the state.
The youth body also urged the Osun State Government and security formations to remain proactive in protecting lives and property while ensuring a safe environment for citizens to engage in lawful activities.
The statement concluded with a message of sympathy to Hon. Ajibola, his family, associates, and supporters, while wishing him a speedy recovery.
At the time of filing this report, security authorities had not publicly released details regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported attack.
