Prioritize Security and Transparency in PVC Distribution, NYAN Osun Urges INEC

OSOGBO — The National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN), Osun State Chapter, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt a security-conscious approach to the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the forthcoming elections, urging the Commission to commence the exercise at its Local Government Area offices before extending collection to Registration Areas (RAs) and polling units.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued by the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sasona Mayowa Ayomide, who stressed that safeguarding the PVC distribution process is essential to protecting the credibility and integrity of Nigeria's electoral system.

According to the Assembly, commencing PVC collection at INEC's Local Government offices would provide a more secure and controlled environment for the exercise, reducing the likelihood of disruption, interference, or unauthorized access to sensitive electoral materials.

The youth legislative body expressed concern that direct distribution at Registration Areas could expose the process to avoidable security challenges, including attempts by hoodlums or other unscrupulous elements to hijack or compromise the exercise.

NYAN argued that a phased distribution model would reduce pressure on collection centres while enabling security agencies and electoral officials to effectively monitor the process and ensure that Permanent Voter Cards are collected only by their rightful owners.

The Assembly further noted that such an approach would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process by promoting transparency, accountability, efficiency, and proper coordination throughout the PVC distribution exercise.

It also maintained that the recommendation would help minimise opportunities for electoral malpractice, enhance the safety of electoral personnel and citizens, and contribute to a more orderly, secure, and credible PVC collection process across Osun State.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance and youth participation, NYAN called on INEC, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring that the distribution exercise is conducted peacefully and in accordance with established electoral standards.

The Assembly also urged residents of Osun State, particularly young people, to remain law-abiding throughout the exercise and resist any attempt by individuals or groups seeking to undermine the democratic process.

According to the Speaker, the credibility of any election begins with a transparent, secure, and well-coordinated PVC distribution process, expressing confidence that the Independent National Electoral Commission would give due consideration to the recommendations in the interest of democracy and the people of Osun State.
