Fear has gripped students of the Osun State College of Health Technology (OSCOHEALTH), Ilesa, following reports of recurring gun violence around the institution, prompting the Student Union Government (SUG) President, Distinguished Senator Comrade Badiru Rohees Olawale (Moore), to issue an urgent security alert.

In a series of strongly worded social media posts, the SUG President disclosed that sporadic gunshots have been recorded around the college environment for four consecutive days, describing the situation as a serious threat to the lives and safety of students.

According to him, the worsening security situation has created widespread fear among students, many of whom now feel unsafe moving around the campus, particularly during the evening and nighttime.

"Since the last four days, sporadic shootings have been going on and on within the campus area (OSCOHEALTH). If this persists, then the students have no choice than to leave their primary assignments and return to their parents and guardians."

He also advised students not only in Ilesa but across neighbouring student communities, including Osogbo and Esa-Oke, to avoid unnecessary night movement, social gatherings, and late-night parties until the security situation improves.

Expressing disappointment over what he described as inadequate security response, the SUG President alleged that despite the proximity of a police station to the institution and repeated reports made to security authorities, there has been little or no visible police presence around the campus at night.

He stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) is aware of the recurring shootings but questioned why security operatives have failed to respond effectively.

"The DPO is aware. The police station is just a stone's throw from the college, yet no police van or personnel are seen on the streets around the college at night. The range at which the guns are fired, I am sure the officers at the station can hear them, but they are turning deaf ears."

One of the incidents highlighted by the student leader involved the fatal shooting of a man just two junctions away from the institution's main gate between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.—a period when many students are usually returning to their hostels.

According to him, the victim's body reportedly remained at the scene until the following day, a development he described as disturbing and indicative of the deteriorating security situation around the college community.

"Just two junctions away from the campus gate, a man was shot dead. That is the exact period students return to their hostels. The corpse was picked up the next day like nothing happened."

In one of his strongest remarks, the SUG President warned politicians against dragging students into political conflicts or exposing them to unnecessary violence.

"We're students. We're not politicians. Do not involve us in your political shenanigans. None of your political ambitions is worth the blood of any student. No student bloodshed will be tolerated."

His comments have fueled concerns among students that the recent violence may be linked to the growing political tension within the state, although no official security agency has established such a connection.

Despite the tense security atmosphere, academic activities at the college have continued, with students preparing for their forthcoming examinations.

The SUG President acknowledged the emotional and psychological pressure the situation has placed on students, remarking that concentrating on examinations under such circumstances would be extremely difficult.

"Exams amidst this panic? To pass go hard gan."

His statements have since generated widespread reactions on social media, with students, parents, and residents calling on the Osun State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to immediately strengthen security around the institution.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, nor the Osun State Police Command had issued an official statement regarding the reported incidents.

Students have continued to appeal for increased security patrols around the campus to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of lives and property.
