TRIBUTE: IN HONOUR OF GEORGE "AFRIKA" IWILADE

27 Years of Courage, 27 Years of Sacrifice

Twenty-seven years ago today, a young law student and Students' Union General Secretary at Obafemi Awolowo University paid the ultimate price for standing against the tyranny of campus cultism. His name was George "Afrika" Iwilade—fondly and forever remembered as Afrika.

On the night of July 9 into the early hours of July 10, 1999, Afrika and four other students—Tunde Oke, Efe Ekede, Eviano Ekelemu, and Yemi Ajiteru—were murdered in cold blood at Awolowo Hall by armed cultists, in what remains one of the darkest chapters in the history of Nigerian tertiary education. Afrika, a vibrant 400-level law student known for wearing his African identity with pride, had led efforts to expose and hand cultists over to the authorities. For that courage, he was hunted and struck down.

On behalf of the Nigeria Next Generation Network (NNGN), under the leadership of National President, Hon. Amb. Abdulsobur A. Adegoke, we join the Obafemi Awolowo University community, the Nigerian student movement, and all who believe in a campus culture free from fear in honouring the memory of George "Afrika" Iwilade today.

Afrika did not die a victim of circumstance—he died standing for something. He chose to confront a menace that many others were too afraid to name. His courage reminds every young Nigerian, and every member of this Network, that true leadership sometimes demands sacrifice, and that the fight for a safer, more just campus and society is a cause worth pursuing.

Twenty-seven years on, the call for justice for Afrika and the OAU Five remains unanswered by the Nigerian justice system. NNGN adds its voice to the enduring call: justice delayed must not become justice denied.

To the students of Obafemi Awolowo University, and to student leaders across Nigeria today: Afrika's legacy lives wherever a young person chooses courage over silence, and principle over convenience. That is the spirit NNGN was built to carry forward.

We remember Afrika.
We remember the OAU Five.
We continue the struggle they died for.
